One of the tasks of The Olympic Museum, the IOC’s official museum, is to illustrate the highlights of each edition of the Games.

An Olympic Museum team was in Sochi, at the heart of the action, to collect items and talk to the heroes of the Games.

The objects collected come mainly from donations by athletes taking part in the Games. The donations are equipment they used in competition or that illustrate some technological development. Any item which provides a tangible reminder of the spirit of the Games, like an act of fair play, for example, is also of great interest.

Here are some of the athletes who were kind enough to enrich the Museum’s collections through their donations: Noriaki Kasai (JPN, ski jump), Marit Bjoergen (NOR, cross-country skiing), Alex Bilodeau (CAN, freestyle skiing - moguls), Julia Marino (PAR, freestyle skiing - slopestyle) and Staale Sandbech (NOR, snowboard - slopestyle). However, the quest for equipment continues after the Games.

The Olympic Museum’s “Words of Olympians” programme is aimed at creating a collection of interviews with athletes. These interviews include the athletes’ stories and anecdotes from when they competed in the Games, and describe their career. As a result, they play a key role in recording the passion and experience of an athlete. Once filmed, the interviews form part of the Museum’s collections.

In Sochi, almost 30 interviews were conducted, with active or former athletes from around 15 countries and five continents. These included figure skating legend Katarina Witt, Canadian speed skater Gilmore Junio (who gave his place to team-mate Denny Morrison, who won silver in the 1,000m) and Indian luger and Olympic scholarship-holder Shiva Keshavan.
