A message from Claudia Bokel, IOC Athletes’ Commission Chair
Firstly, I would like to wish good luck to those of you who are competing in the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.
Any edition of the Games is an exciting – and sometimes very nerve-wracking – time for athletes, but it is also the pinnacle of any sports career, and competing at the Games is a truly special moment that all of you should savour.
For those athletes competing at the Games, I would urge all of you to exercise your right to vote in the Athletes’ Commission election.
We will be electing two new members to the Commission, with current members Beckie Scott and Saku Koivu both finishing their terms of office.
I would like to thank both Beckie and Saku for all the work that they have done over the past eight years and look forward to working with the two new members who are elected in Sochi.
There are nine candidates in the election and every competing athlete who is at the Games has the right to vote. I believe everyone should use that right, as it’s important that you choose who represents you on the Commission.
Voting will be taking place at the IOC Space in the Olympic Villages, where you will also be able to collect some exciting gifts and learn more about the IOC Athlete Career Programme, the IOC Athlete MOOC (massive open online course), the Performance Management Tool, the Athletes’ Hub and other IOC programmes. You can also find a lot of information about the Athlete Career Programme on our website.
Those of you looking to connect with fellow athletes should also check out the IOC’s new Olympic Athletes’ Hub app, which brings together the Facebook, Twitter and Instagram feeds of Olympic athletes. It’s a great tool for athletes to interact with both fans and other athletes, with new additions making it even easier for us to communicate in fun, innovative ways.
Whether you are competing or not, I hope all of you are looking forward to Sochi 2014. Personally, I love every edition of the Games – be it Summer or Winter – and I am sure that Sochi 2014 will be a memorable Games. I love the atmosphere that is created at the Olympic Games – it is such a special occasion and is the goal for every athlete.
Every member of the Athletes’ Commission will be in Sochi and in the IOC Space, so we look forward to meeting as many of you as possible. Make sure you come up to us in the Village and say, “Hello”, and feel free to ask us any questions you may have.
Those of you who are not competing at the Games can still contact a member of the Athletes’ Commission by sending us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org. We really value your input and are always eager to hear your views on the issues affecting athletes; this is, after all, your Commission!
Make sure you sign up to receive the next edition of For the Record, which will highlight all of the excitement from the Winter Games!
I very much look forward to continuing our work together in the months ahead.
With my best wishes,
