2nd Asian Athletes’ Forum held in Kuwait a roaring success!
was the word that Yuko Arakida, Chair of the OCA Athletes' Committee, used to describe the 2nd Asian Athletes' Forum as the three-day gathering came to a close on Saturday in Kuwait. The Forum was held in Kuwait from 22 to 24 January, and over 100 athletes and sports administrators from Asia were in attendance.
Following a successful 1st Asian Athletes’ Forum held in July 2011 in Tokyo, the Forum was designed to create a communication network between attendees, to share knowledge relating to athletes’ issues and to discuss different activities and perspectives in their respective NOCs in Asia.
IOC Athletes’ Commission Chair Claudia Bokel and member Pedro Yang, and ANOC Athletes' Commission Chair Barbara Kendall all attended the session. Mr Yang presented on the IOC Athletes’ Commission programmes and activities such as the IOC Athlete MOOC, the IOC Coaches’ Night, and IOC Athlete Career Programme. He thought that the Forum was a successful and fruitful gathering, saying that:
“Olympic Agenda 2020 recognises the importance of the athlete’s voice, and this was a strong theme at the Forum”
"The main purpose of the Forum was to encourage all the NOCs to establish an Athletes' Committee because the input and the experience of the athletes is very important for the Olympic Movement," said Mrs Arakida, a member of Japan's women's volleyball team which won Olympic gold at Montreal in 1976.
